The International School for Young Astronomers (ISYA)

The 39th International School for Young Astronomers (ISYA) 2017 is jointly organized by International Astronomical Union (IAU),the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (NASL), Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute(ESSTI) –Entoto Observatory and Research Center(EORC) and will be conducted from 08-19 May 2017 in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. The school lasts for two-weeks and contains a series of lectures on astronomy and astrophysics, along with relevant observational, data reduction techniques and hand on practices.

The Objective of Hosting ISYA

  1. To deliver the basics training of Astronomy for young students and acquaint them with the basic knowledge of Astronomy , observational and computational methods and techniques that can be used to study Astronomy and Astrophysics
  2. Provide a venue to network among the astronomy and space science young scientific communities
  3. Give opportunity for students to explore about possible research areas and education to study further in Astronomy and Astrophysics
  4. To promote and enhance the development of Astronomy in Africa, particularly in East Africa region
  5. To establish and strength international and regional collaboration in research and teaching of Astronomy with EORC

Topics covered in the school

  1. Observational Astronomy: Optical photometry and spectroscopy
  2. Observational Astronomy: Radioastronomy
  3. Planetary Astronomy : Solar system, Near Earth objects and Exoplanets
  4. Stellar Astronomy: Stellar structure and evolution; the structure & activity of sun and other stars
  5. Galactic Astronomy: structure, composition and evolution of our galaxy and nearby galaxies
  6. Extragalactic Astronomy & Cosmology: galaxy formation, evolution, interaction, intergalactic medium and the totality of the universe in general.
  7. Data Reduction and Analysis
  8. Use and practice of: Databases, Astronomical Software, Virtual Observatories and Remote observations
