Research Areas

The research are focused on Observational , Instrumentation, theoretical ,Computational Astronomy & Astrophysics fields such as: -
Planetary Astronomy :- Study about Solar system ,Near Earth objects and Extra-solar planets
Stellar Astronomy & Astrophysics: - study the structure & activity of sun and other stars
Galactic & interstellar Medium Astronomy :- study structure , composition and evolution of our galaxy and nearby galaxies
Extragalactic Astronomy & Cosmology: - study the universe beyond our Galaxy such as galaxy formation, evolution , interaction, intergalactic medium and the totality of the universe in general.

Space & Astronomical Instrumentation

The research group is on preparation to collaborate and jointly study Near-Earth objects such as Asteroids with NASA and jointly work with East African research Network

This research division aims to carryout research in the following domains:

Earth-solar system environment interactions;

Forecast of geomagnetic storm :based on Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) and Ionospheric Parameters (IP)

Ionospheric and tropospheric study

Climate Science & modeling

Space Geodesy: satellite laser ranging /tracking

Earth Observation

This research division is dedicated to perform research in earth systems from high atmosphere to deep inner core using a mix of satellites to address the most pressing societal, economic and environmental challenging problems. The division consists of geodesy and remote sensing research groups


Geodesy research group aims to conduct research in wider areas of physical and space geodesy
Global Navigation Satellite System for precise positioning, navigation, cadastral and resource mapping, surveillance operation, and ionospheric and tropospheric applications.
Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) for ground surface deformation and land slide and subsidence monitoring.
Altimetry and Satellite Laser Ranging for better understanding of the Earth system
Gravity field for height system modernization, water resource sensing, exploration and geodynamics.
Integrated Geodetic research to contribute for the realization of International Reference Frame and System, and contribute to satellite orbit determination.

Remote sensing

Remote sensing research group focus on the following major research domains:
Forestry and Ecosystem monitoring and mapping
Precision Agriculture: crop monitoring and yield forecasting
Geology Applications: lithological and sedimentation mapping, geo-hazard mapping;
Hydrology Applications: watershed mapping & management, flood delineation and mapping, ground water targeting;
Land Use/Land Cover mapping: natural resource management, wildlife protection, encroachment;
Urban and Regional planning and Development: land parcel and cadastral mapping, infrastructure mapping, urban and fringe land use change detection, future urban expansion planning

Satellite Science and Technology Research Division(on going project)

This research division focus on
Building of small scale (cube sat) to large sacle (earth observation) satellite Projects
Develop satellite data receiving and archiving center
Explore present and future satellite data;
Provide satellite data for application oriented development research;
Build the capacity of higher education in satellite data analysis and interpretation;
Develop advanced research in satellite through learning-by -doing on design,manufacture, integration and test of satellites

    Professional Collaboration

    About 26 professors from USA, Russia, China, Australia,Canada, Europe, Asia and Africa are promised and signed an agreement to engage in research & training program of EORC


    In November 2012, the ESSS general Assembly and Board decided EO to be an independent research center and transferred the property owned by ESS to EO such as land, two one meter telescopes along with their domes, offices and gust house buildings at entoto mountain with start up seed money to begun its operation.

    In January 2012/2013 EO is officially established as independent research and training center owned and run by ESSS, 32 public and one private university.

    EO is a national facility responsible to lead research & training in astronomy and astrophysics, space science, Earth Observation, Satellite and related science and technology at national level and make international collaborations and aspire to be East Africa regional Research and training center of excellence.

    EO is the first Astronomical observatory in East Africa and the only research and teaching center working on Astronomy, Space science, Satellite technology and Earth Observation in Ethiopia.
